David Ong – My Pottery Journey
‘My journey with pottery began in the beautiful Blue Mountains of New South Wales, Australia after I retired from a career in interior design.
I started with hand building in Leura in the Blue Mountains with Lyn Heart, where I discovered the joy of working directly with clay and creating with my hands. From there, I moved on to throwing in Katoomba with Will Castle at Katoomba Clay, developing a whole new appreciation for the wheel and the possibilities it offers.
My husband is Irish, and we now divide our time between Dublin and Sydney. While in Dublin, I joined Throwing Shapes, where I’ve continued to learn, experiment and hone my skills through classes and practice.
What I love most about pottery is the process — taking a simple lump of clay and gradually transforming it into something beautiful, tactile and functional. There is something incredibly satisfying about creating an object that can become part of everyday life.
I’m constantly experimenting with different glazes, colours and combinations, always looking for new ways to bring each piece to life. No two pieces are ever quite the same, and I love the element of surprise that comes with the firing process.
For me, pottery is an ongoing journey of learning, experimenting and creating — and I’m enjoying every step of it.
I hope you enjoy my work as much as I enjoy making it.’
We are delighted here in The Narrow Space to be the first stockist in Ireland of this wonderful range of pottery!
